Colin Kaepernick Is Assisting Thompson's Family With Finding Answers Regarding His Death

According to TMZ, Kaepernick’s decision came after a medical examiner’s initial autopsy of Thompson’s body “failed to provide answers” and came back as “undetermined.”

Kaepernick reportedly became aware of the update and wanted to help the Thompson family.

He then contacted attorney Ben Crump and offered to “fund a second, independent autopsy.”

TMZ reports that autopsies can usually cost between $20,000-$50,000.

Kaepernick Is Concerned About The Conditions That May Have Contributed To Thompson's Death

In addition to wanting to help Thompson’s family find answers regarding his death, Kaepernick is also concerned about the conditions of the Fulton County Jail.

As The Shade Room previously reported, Thompson’s jail cell was found to be “filthy,” the family’s attorney Michael Harper expressed.

“Mr. Thompson was arrested for misdemeanor simple battery on June 12, 2022, in Atlanta, GA. After his arrest Mr. Thompson was placed in the Fulton County Jail. After determining that Mr. Thompson had mental health issues, he was placed in the psychiatric wing of the Jail. Three months later Mr. Thompson was found dead in a filthy jail cell after being eaten alive by insects and bed bugs…”

Additionally, Harper shared that Thompson’s family approved photographs of his cell to be released to the public. Furthermore, explaining that the jail cell conditions were “not fit for a diseased animal” and the Fulton County Jail “must be closed and replaced.”

“…The family approved photographs attached to this release show that the jail cell Mr. Thompson was housed in was not fit for a diseased animal. He did not deserve this…”

In the photos, bed bugs cover Thompson’s body and face. Additionally, his jail cell depicts excessive rusting, chipped paint, dirt, and grime.

The Thompson Family Attorney Has Also Addressed The Behavior Of The Jail's Staff

As The Shade Room previously reported, Harper also explained that the staff at Fulton County Jail was aware of Thompson’s “deteriorating” condition. However, they “did nothing to administer aid to him or to help him.”

“Jail records obtained via GA Open Records Requests establish that the detention offices and medical staff at the Jail noticed that Mr. Thompson was deteriorating, but did nothing to administer aid to him or to help him. They literally watched his health decline until he died.”

Furthermore, Harper also explained that when Thompson’s body was found, one of the officers “refused to administer CPR.”

“When his body was found one of the detention officers refused to administer CPR because in her words she ‘freaked out’…”

Harper believes that someone needs to be “held accountable” for Thompson’s death and that the Fulton County Jail must be closed.

“Someone has to be held accountable for his death. The Fulton County Jail must be closed and replaced.”

The lawyer is also seeking a “criminal investigation” into the matter, per an exclusive statement to Daily Mail.

“We are asking for a criminal investigation into the death of Mr Thompson. We are also asking for the jail to be shut down.”
