Diddy Trial Week 1: Opening Statements & Testimony Recap From Cassie, Dawn Richard & Others (RECAP)
Share

Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs: We’re two weeks into his trial proceedings. Jury selection started two weeks ago and was finalized early in court proceedings on May 12. The Shade Room was on site as the trial kicked off with opening statements. For the record, he’s facing one count of racketeering conspiracy, one count of sex trafficking by force, fraud, or coercion, and two counts of transportation to engage in prostitution. Prosecution is set out to prove these crimes happened between 2004 and 2024, and Cassie was a KEY witness in all of this.

Keep scrolling to see everything Cas said on the stand, along with a recap of testimonies from Dawn Richard and MORE.

#TSRTrialWatch: The jury and alternates — 12 men and 6 women — are now seated in the courtroom.

Opening statements will start after the judge finishes explaining the law as it relates to this trial, along with incidentals such as that a light breakfast will be provided to them…

Like President Donald Trump’s criminal trial in 2024, the jurors’ identities in Diddy’s trial will be kept anonymous. Judge Arun Subramanian promised them that, right before warning them to ditch any outside information they have on Diddy. It’s a standard, but important instruction, he said.

“Anything you’ve seen or heard outside the courtroom is not evidence. It must be disregarded,” the judge said.

Opening statements kicked off on May 12 at about 10:55 a.m., NYC time. The prosecution spoke first, and they wasted no time getting into the nitty-gritty!

Trial: Prosecution Says Diddy Intimidated Cassie With Sex Tape “Souvenirs”

Assistant U.S. Attorney Emily Johnson spoke for the prosecution’s opening statement. She acknowledged that fans see him as “larger than life.” However, she says there’s “another side to him, a side that ran a criminal enterprise.”  Johnson cited an instance where Diddy allegedly kidnapped an employee, and another example of Diddy threatening Cassie with the release of sex tapes allegedly featuring her and a male escort. The recordings, Johnson says, were “souvenirs of the most humiliating nights of her life.”

Additionally, Johnson accused Diddy of beating Cassie over minor occurrences, such as leaving a sex party early or taking too long in the bathroom. “Her livelihood depended on keeping him happy,” the U.S. attorney said.

Cassie was not in the courtroom on May 12 at the start of opening statements.

#TSRTrialWatch: “For 20 years, the defendant, with the help of his trusted inner circle, committed crime after crime. That’s why we are here today. That’s what this case is about.” Attorney Johnson said, telling jurors that Cassie was far from the only woman Combs beat and…

Prosecution Says Diddy Paid $100,000 To Cover Cassie’s Hallway Beating

CNN shook the internet when it published the never-before-seen footage of Diddy kicking and slamming Cassie in a hotel hallway in 2016. Days after the video went viral, Sean Combs apologized to Cassie in a video, calling his behavior “inexcusable” and his actions disgusting. He claimed that he attended therapy, went to rehab, and asked “God for his mercy” following the incident.

“I’m so sorry. But I’m committed to be a better man each and every day. I’m not asking for forgiveness. I’m truly sorry,” Diddy said at the time. Cassie never responded to his public apology, but later issued a strong statement, encouraging people to believe “victims the first time.”

In their opening statement, the prosecution recalled the hallway beating and accused the mogul of coordinating a cover-up afterward. A bodyguard and Diddy’s chief of staff allegedly witnessed him trying to pay $100,000 in cash in a brown paper bag to a security guard to ditch the tape.

“This is far from the only time that the defendant’s inner circle tried to close ranks and do damage control,” Johnson said.

Prosecution Says Diddy Beat A “Jane” Who Confronted Him, Defense Team Denies It

All that said, U.S. Attorney Johnson also alleged that the singer is not the only woman Combs beat and sexually exploited. A woman only referred to as Jane allegedly confronted Sean Combs in 2024 about years of forced participation in “Freak offs.”

According to TSR in the courtroom, Attorney Johnson said that Diddy allegedly punched Jane in the face, dragged her by her hair, and slapped her to the ground. “Then he demanded that she call an escort, cover up her black eye, and ingest ecstasy,” TSR reported.

#TSRTrialWatch: Johnson introduces another attack on another woman, "Like with Cassie, the defendant’s violence had gotten him what he wanted"

Diddy’s lawyer, Teny Geragos, alleges that the case is about “love, jealousy, infidelity, and money.” Furthermore, Geragos admitted that Diddy can act “jealous or angry,” and even come off as “a jerk or mean.” However, she said that Diddy is being tried on racketeering charges, rather than a case of domestic violence.

“Jealousy drove choices of the victims… they remain in multi-year relationships with him. These women were in love with him. Infidelity and jealousy drove the violence. Alcohol and drugs drove things. But he is not a racketeer,” the attorney reportedly said.

Like the prosecution, the lawyer also jumped right into Cassie. She slammed Diddy’s actions in the hotel video as “horrible dehumanizing violence,” but also said Cassie “had a choice every single day to stay with him.”

#TSRTrialWatch: Geragos — “Cassie had a choice every single day to stay with him. That was her better choice. Until she broke up with him. She was not coerced. When she left, there were no repercussions. She ran into the arms of a physical trainer combs had hired to train her.”

— TheShadeRoom (@TheShadeRoom) May 12, 2025

As for Jane, the defense team painted her as “desperate” to be with Diddy, and claimed that’s the reason she engaged in “consensual threesomes and hotel parties.”

#TSRTrialWatch: Geragos claims Diddy’s accusers were motivated by money, pointing out Cassie’s $30 million lawsuit.

“I want you to ask yourself, how many millions of reasons does this witness, swearing to tell the truth and nothing but the truth, have to lie?”

— TheShadeRoom (@TheShadeRoom) May 12, 2025

#TSRTrialWatch: The defense finishes its opening statement by asking the jury not to “impose your morality on this man.”

Teny Geragos: “If you listen, you will find him not guilty of these crimes. Thank you”

Diddy’s “Freak Offs” Had Other Names Too & Trial Jury Will See Videos

One stand-out comment in Attorney Johnson’s opening was about the infamous “freak offs.” The public has been obsessed with those since the raids on his homes in early 2024 and his arrest in September. More lawsuits followed Cassie’s bombshell one in November 2023, and “freak offs” were a common theme. In her statement, Johnson revealed that they had other names, too. “Wild King Nights” and “Hotel Nights” were also alleged code names for the “highly orchestrated, drug-fueled sex parties.”

Prosecution argues that Diddy funded these parties with his company and held them at hotels across the U.S. and overseas. He allegedly had employees stage rooms with his preferred lighting, extra linens, and lubricant.

From the courtroom, The Shade Room reported that:

Johnson went on to state that Combs compelled women, including Cassie, to take drugs and engage in sexual activity with male escorts while he gratified himself and sometimes recorded them.

Prosecution confirmed that the jury will see videos of Cassie and Jane “pretend they enjoy themselves during Freak Offs.” There is also allegedly footage of Sean Combs “brutally beating Cassie” during a freak-off at a hotel in Los Angeles.

Editor’s Update: On day two of Cassie’s testimony, the prosecution chose not to show the freak off videos and presented still images instead. Follow along for live updates from Cassie’s testimony HERE.

First Witness On The Stand: Police Officer

LAPD Officer Israel Florez is the first witness to take the stand in the Diddy trial. Florez worked as a security guard at the hotel where Diddy was seen physically assaulting Cassie and responded on March 5, 2016, to a report of a woman in distress on the sixth floor. When the officer arrived, he witnessed Cassie and Diddy arguing and told them they had to take it to their room. Florez added that Combs offered him money to keep the incident quiet.
“Cassie said she wanted her phone and her bag. Ms. Cassie said she wanted to leave. Mr. Combs said, ‘you’re not leaving.’ I saw inside the room, a male black wearing dark clothing. [Combs] called for me, he was holding a stack of money, not to tell anyone,” as reported by live courtroom coverage from TSR Staff.
Florez claims he denied the paperbag payout and told Diddy to return to his room. Things got rough, leading to Florez pinning Diddy to the wall, after the mogul allegedly accused the guard of recording him.

#TSRTrialWatch: Flores says he denied the bribe saying, “ I don’t want your money. Just go back into your room.”

The witness, Flores, admits on the stand that he took two video recordings of the hallway assault on his phone. He said he did it to “show my wife at home.” In total, the prosecution showed two cellphone videos and three hotel surveillance videos of the attack at the hotel, per The Associated Press.

Second Witness On The Stand: Identified As "Male Stripper"

Per TSR’s trial watch coverage, a male stripper took the stand following the police officer. A man identified as Daniel Phillip said he was paid to have sexual relations with Cassie at the Gramercy Park Hotel in 2012.

“[Cassie] was in the hotel room in a red wig, stockings, and sunglasses. She gave me a few hundred dollars. [There were] red couches, Astroglide, a lubricant. There was a man on the right side of the room. The man had on a white robe and a bandanna over his face, below his eyes, and a baseball cap. From his voice, I recognized him as Sean Combs,” Phillip reportedly told the court.

At that point, Phillip was reportedly questioned about the use of baby oil in the alleged encounter. Per the stripper, the lubricant was allegedly used “every time.”

“Sean Combs said we didn’t have enough baby oil on. He’d say, y’all slow down, separate from each other. One time he tried to have us role play, like we had just met at an airport. We weren’t good so we skipped that,” he said.

Additionally, Phillips reportedly shared that Diddy’s alleged physical assault of Cassie led him to part ways with the pair. On one occasion, per Phillip, Diddy allegedly told Cassie, “B**ch, when I tell you come over, you come over.” In another incident, Diddy allegedly was heard slapping Cassie, per Phillip.

“He walked out in a towel. She ran to me. I asked, ‘Why are you staying with this guy. She said it was ok,'” he told the court.

During Phillips’ testimony, it was added that Diddy’s daughters, Jessie and D’Lila, left the courtroom.

Day 2: Jury Returns As Trial Kicks Off With Judge Responding To Media Request For Explicit Exhibits

Once in the courtroom, Judge Subramanian “almost immediately” responded to the media’s request to view sexually explicit exhibits entered into the trial. The judge ultimately shared that he’s “inclined” to grant the request. However, he will allow another day for party submissions and to “balance the privacy issues of the witnesses and defendant with the rights of the public to know what’s happening during the trial.”

By 10:03 a.m., the jurors returned to the courtroom.

The Cross Examination Continues With David Phillip & The Judge Prepares Courtroom For Cassie's Testimony

The cross-examination, which began on Monday, continued with Diddy’s lawyer questioning male stripper Daniel Phillip. Xavier Donaldson reportedly attempted to poke holes in his testimony and insinuate that he “had a thing for Cassie,” and would have wanted her to himself.

“I was attracted to her. If she ever gave me the chance to date her, I absolutely would have,” Phillips asserted before leaving the stand.

Judge Arun Subramanian has called a 10-minute break before Cassie’s testimony.

A lawyer for Combs asked that Cassie’s husband not be allowed in the courtroom while she testifies because he might be called as a witness.

Ultimately, the judge ruled that Alex Fine could be present for “most” of Cassie’s testimony.

Acting on a defense request, Judge Subramanian said Fine must leave the courtroom when questioning turns to Cassie’s allegation that Combs raped her in 2018.

Lawyers For Other Witnesses Express Concern For Clients

A few hours after Cassie resumed her testimony for the prosecution on Wednesday, the court took a scheduled break. During the break, lawyers from other witnesses on the docket, including a “Jane” and “Mia,” expressed concerns about their clients to the judge. They reportedly asked for continued access to communicate with their clients, particularly to calm nerves.

The judge granted the request but prohibited the lawyers from influencing testimony or advising on what to say on the stand.

During the break, lawyers for accusers who plan to testify emphasized how nervous their clients are. The lawyers spoke to the judge to ensure they’d continue to be able to communicate with their clients during breaks in the trial, in part, to calm their nerves.

Prosecution Will Wrap Cassie Questions On Day 3, Defense To Change Its Strategy

Prosecutor Emily Johnson told the judge she expects to finish questioning Cassie before the end of the day, leaving some time for defense lawyers to begin their cross-examination.

Cross-Examination Of Cassie Begins

Cross-examination of Cassie began on Thursday (May 15), and Diddy’s defense opened with questions about their early days in a relationship. They had the singer read multiple documents aloud from emails to texts throughout the day. The couple had exchanged messages about loving each other, and even explicit texts in anticipation of “freak offs,” which Cassie later said was done to appease Combs. “Loving FOs were just words at that point,” she said on the stand.

She admitted to loving him, being jealous of Kim Porter at one point, and having “scary” arguments about Gina Huynh. Here’s everything Cassie said on cross-examination.

Dawn Richard Will Testify In Diddy's Trial

Court session on Thursday ended with Diddy’s defense questioning Cassie about the “freak off” that culminated in her assault caught on camera at the Intercontinental in Los Angeles. Defense will continue questioning Cassie on Friday, and the judge permitted five hours. Prosecutors announced it will take half an hour to question Cassie again after the defense rests. Lead attorney in the case, Marc Agnifilo, stated he will update the court on Friday about whether questioning of Cassie can end tomorrow.

Another witness was also announced for the defense: former Dainty Kane member Dawn Richard. The singer filed a lawsuit against him for sexual abuse in September, accusing him of groping her naked body in dressing rooms on multiple occasions between 2009 and 2011. In her filing, she also said that she witnessed Diddy verbally abuse Cassie at his Los Angeles home while recording an album and that he threatened her and Kalenna Harper over it.

“Y’all b*****s don’t get in my relationship,” he allegedly said. “Don’t tell my b***h what she need to be doing… Just make money and shut the f**k up… I end artists… I shelve career … You could be missing… You b*****s want to die today.”
