Diddy was born on November 4, 1969, to his mom, Janice Combs, and his dad, Melvin Earl Combs. PEOPLE reports Diddy never built a relationship with his father because Melvin was killed in 1972. The rapper was only three years old when Melvin died from gunshot wounds. Following his dad’s death, Janice held it down in Mount Vernon, New York, where she was born and raised.
Education Was Janice Combs’ Top Priority
As he grew up, Janice made his education a priority. She reportedly put him in an all-boys Catholic school and later college. During a 2006 interview with Oprah Winfrey, Diddy shared that his mom stepped into the role of his father, while his grandmother acted like a second mom.
