“After the conclusion of the trial yesterday, we gave the court our official notice that Karmelo Anthony is filing an appeal. Almost 24 hours after Karmelo Anthony received his 35-year prison sentence, his parents spoke exclusively with Mimi Brown, the front page news anchor of ‘The Breakfast Club.’ When Mimi asked whether they believe Karmelo received a fair trial, both his mother and father responded, “Absolutely not.” Karmelo’s mother added while fighting back tears, “And we will keep fighting. We not stop fighting for justice for my son.”
Karmelo’s father spoke about his feelings of guilty surrounding the case and trial. He said he wishes he had pushed back and refused the attorney’s recommendation to defend Karmelo. More Details About Karmelo's Trial
As The Shade Room previously reported, a Texas jury convicted Karmelo Anthony of murder after hearing four days of testimony. During the trial, Anthony’s attorney argued that he acted in self-defense, but they failed to persuade jurors. Prosecutors said that on April 2, 2025, Anthony entered a rival high school’s tent during a track meet and got into an altercation with Austin Metcalf. According to the testimony, Anthony told Metcalf not to touch him before pulling a knife from his bag and stabbing him.
In June 2025, Karmelo Anthony’s family addressed his indictment in a statement posted on a former GiveSendGo campaign page. The family said they had hoped prosecutors would not move forward with the indictment. They also explained that they were using funds to raised through the campagin to cover urgent needs and legal expenses.
“This is a moment we hoped we would never face, yet one we’ve been preparing for throughout these long and painful months. Through it all, you — our community — have been our strength… Now, as the legal process moves forward toward trial, we enter an even more intense phase — one that will demand everything from us emotionally, financially, and spiritually… These funds are being used to cover essential and urgent needs that have arisen as a result of this tragic situation… While legal expenses are a significant part of this fund, they are only one part.
