“The Gentle Giant
A poem and tribute to our beloved brother Malcolm-Jamal Warner

Today, we lost a gentle giant.
A man who won our hearts not by force, but by quiet grace.
From the very beginning, Malcolm-Jamal Warner reminded us that being calm, classy, sophisticated, and soulful could carry you far in life.

He was the soft-spoken strength behind a generation’s most beloved show.
We watched The Cosby Show and saw, for the first time, a world many of us had never known.
A Black family made up of doctors, lawyers, artists, and thinkers.
A household rooted in love, education, laughter, and dignity…”

#19

“As children, we weren’t sure that kind of family even existed.
We didn’t think people could speak to each other that gently.
That siblings could disagree with love.
That fathers could discipline with warmth.
That young Black men like Theo Huxtable could grow into manhood with vulnerability and joy.

But Malcolm showed us it was possible.
And then he lived it—beyond the show.
In his poetry, in his music, in his commitment to excellence and privacy,
He never wavered from who he was.

Everything about him on screen felt real,
Because it was.
And everything he became after felt like a continuation of that truth.
He never chased noise. He stayed grounded.
He showed us that fame doesn’t have to strip away your soul…”

#20

“Today, we mourn what feels unimaginable.
A loss that cuts through nostalgia, through childhood, through what we thought would always be.
My sincere prayers go out to his wife,
To his children,
To his family,
To everyone who loved him, worked beside him, and walked life with him.

This tragedy hit us hard.
Not just because of who he was on screen,
But because of who he remained when the cameras turned off.

We lost more than an actor.
We lost a presence.
A gentle, regal, beautiful soul who walked with dignity and reminded us
especially as Black boys and men
that you could be powerful without being loud, important without being arrogant, respected without ever demanding it…”

#21

“Today, we sit in that grief
And we say goodbye
to a man who gave us more than entertainment
He gave us hope
He gave us another way to exist

Rest well, Malcolm.
You were everything we needed.”

Angela Bassett

Meanwhile, Angela Bassett took to Instagram to write:

“When a special soul like @malcolmjamalwar leaves us far too soon, words fail to adequately describe the unimaginable grief. Malcolm was more than a gifted actor; he was a longtime friend. When I met him, he was a star on the show that was TV royalty, The Cosby Show. He warmly embraced me as a working actor who was trying to find my way. Even in his youth, Malcolm’s empathy, quiet strength, and his bright light surrounded us all. Then to have the opportunity to work with him again last year on @911onabc was a memorable full circle moment for us both. In this life, Malcolm is what’s known as a soulful artist whose deep commitment to his craft left an impression on me that has never faded. He carried the weight of cultural legacy with grace, and he always made space for others to shine. His light will remain in our hearts always. My prayers are with you and yours. Rest in perfect peace until we meet again.”

Questlove

Questlove wrote on Instagram:

“If you looked like me coming of age in the 80s, Malcom-as-Theo was a gps/lighthouse of navigating safety to adulthood. For those of us that didnt have ‘examples’ or ‘safe environments’—I would like to think for anyone of age we used this entire show —and its offspring as life blueprints

Losing the Huxtables was a painful divorce I wasn’t ready for but I never once thought about the offspring of that show transitioning before I did.

Seeing myself in every episode through his shoes: like being bad at football, wanting clothes outside of my budget, hiding things from your parents (ear piercings or weed), living in a ‘respectable politics’ house of jazz vs ‘teen musi’” —-pssssh Theo being instrumental to a lion’s share of gen x teens to see how a sampler worked!!! Or even singalongs at a family gathering—-him dealing with dyslexia ——he even had me think I too can get by in life surviving on ‘bologna & cereal’ and for the first time thinking about ‘what does it mean to be an adult without depending on your parents?’———”

#30

“Alot of us only had the Huxtables to vicariously live through and I was Malcolm. Meeting him on 94 was a thrill when I first got in the biz.

Mal Jam was the earliest co-signer of the Roots. He attended many a show way before the world got to know us. All that time talking about music extensively and we never got our chance to collaborate as we said we would.

He was an amazing soul who always took the time out to school me and talk about his experiences in life and the business. We always traded music and playlists with each other and despite all that he went through in life he expressed ZERO cynicism or bitterness in his journey and constantly lived in the present which dictated his future——he was never the guy stuck in a glory days bubble (but always graciously obliged me when I asked a gajillion questions of “what was it like back then?!!).

I wasn’t prepared to say goodbye in this manner but here we are in 2025. Love & Strength to his family and his loved ones and all of the people his life’s journey inspired.

Thank you Mal Jammin On The One!”

Sherri Shepherd

“I’m completely devastated over the passing of my friend Malcolm-Jamal Warner. He brought much laughter and gravitas playing my husband on my self-titled sitcom. He also made two appearances on my talk show ‘Sherri,’ most recently in April to promote his series ‘Alert: Missing Persons Unit.’ As someone who grew up on TV, Malcolm remained one of the most-grounded people I’ve ever met in our business. To know Malcolm was to know a renaissance man that possessed humor, grace, humility and deep cultural appreciation. He was just a good guy! His passing is a true loss to the Hollywood community. He was a proud girl dad and loved his daughter so much. To his family, friends and all who loved him—my heart is with you.” – Sherri Shepherd, Friend and Co-Star
