In a raw and emotional interview with Women’s Health, Lizzo reflected on the deep depression she experienced in 2023—a time when her mental health allegedly took a decline amid headline-making controversy. The moment came just as she was hit with a lawsuit from three former dancers accusing her of harassment and toxic workplace behavior, sending the internet and her world into chaos.
The hitmaker shared that she became paranoid, withdrawn, and even cut off communication with her therapist. “I wasn’t present. I wasn’t open [and] I wasn’t myself anymore,” she admitted, revealing just how heavy things got behind the scenes. But now, a year and a half later, Lizzo is ready to reclaim her peace.
“You look around and think about every person you’ve ever known and every experience, and you wonder, was that real?” she said to Women’s Health. “I got very paranoid and isolated. I used to walk into glam and be like, ‘Oh, let me tell you about this crazy s*** that happened last night!’ I couldn’t do that anymore. I pushed everyone away. I wasn’t even talking to my therapist.”
