Roommates, it looks like Luigi Mangione might be facing the ultimate punishment if convicted for the death of Brian Thompson. As previously reported, he’s accused of fatally shooting the UnitedHealthcare CEO outside of a New York City hotel on December 4. On Tuesday, U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi revealed that she has directed prosecutors to pursue the death penalty against Mangione.

Attorney General Says THIS About Requesting Death Penalty

Luigi faces separate state and federal charges for the UnitedHealthcare CEO killing. According to the Associated Press, Mangione’s federal charges include murder with a firearm and interstate stalking resulting in death. The first charge lists the death penalty as a possible punishment. Meanwhile, his state charges have a maximum punishment of life in prison.

As mentioned, U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi skipped over April Fool’s Day and dropped the death penalty bombshell on April 1. In an official statement, she detailed the directive given to Acting U.S. Attorney Matthew Podolsky.

“Luigi Mangione’s murder of Brian Thompson — an innocent man and father of two young children — was a premeditated, cold-blooded assassination that shocked America. After careful consideration, I have directed federal prosecutors to seek the death penalty in this case as we carry out President Trump’s agenda to stop violent crime and Make America Safe Again,” AG Pam Bondi said.

AP notes that Luigi’s case is the first time the Justice Department has sought the death penalty since President Donald Trump signed the executive order to revive it. That happened on Trump’s first day of his second term. President Biden and his administration had halted the controversial act. Meanwhile, Trump had an unprecedented number of executions during his first term, 13 total. He has since been loud about wanting to expand capital punishment.

AP reports that Luigi Mangione has not entered a plea for his federal charges and pled not guilty in the state indictment. Though the trials were going to run parallel, the state was expected to go first. However, it’s unclear if the attorney general’s announcement will change that. In March, CBS News reported that Luigi’s next federal court hearing will happen on April 18, while the next state hearing will occur in June.

Luigi Mangione’s Attorney Reacts To The Death Penalty Announcement

According to AP, Mangione’s lawyer has already reacted to the announcement. Karen Friedman Agnifilo reportedly said, “The Justice Department has moved from the dysfunctional to the barbaric.”

Agnifilo also said her client “is caught in a high-stakes game of tug-of-war between the state and federal prosecutors.” In this case, though, “the trophy is a young man’s life,” Luigi’s lawyer said. She reportedly plans to fight all charges against Luigi.

More Details About UnitedHealthcare CEO’s Killing

As previously reported, Luigi Mangione was arrested after a five-day manhunt. An employee of a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, recognized him and tipped off law enforcement. Once at the scene, police ultimately found a ghost gun capable of firing a 9mm round, which was consistent with the murder weapon. They also discovered a notebook with an alleged manifesto against the health insurance industry and the wealthy execs who run it. Luigi was also reportedly wearing similar clothes to the masked gunman who shot Brian Thompson in the back as the CEO arrived at an annual UnitedHealthcare conference.
