We all have those days we have bigger insecurities than others; but when you’re a young child, those insecurities may seem magnified. Lupita Nyong’o recalls a similar journey she had and has decided to write a book that helps other children who are currently experiencing her strife.
Sulwe is a picture book about a five-year-old girl named Sulwe lives in Kenya and has darker skin than her classmates and family members. Sulwe wishes she had lighter skins, but luckily has the guidance of her mother and the night sky, she learns that her black is beautiful!
Lupita says she was often teased as a child for her darker skin so she hopes that this book can serve “as an inspiration for everyone to walk with joy in their own skin.”
Sulwe is slated for release in January 2019.
