Remember that gorgeous pearled Calvin Klein dress that Lupita Nyong’o slayed everyone on this year’s Oscar red carpet with? The one valued at $150,000 that was reported stolen out of her London West Hollywood hotel room, well it was returned and you won’t believe why!
According to the NY Daily News, the thief called TMZ providing them with a road map on the whereabouts of the dress and how the dress was stolen in the first place. The anonymous swiper said he knew where the cameras were placed in the hotel so it was useless for the cops to look at surveillance cameras, which was deemed true because authorities found nothing off the cameras. He says he took the opportunity when he saw Lupita’s door left slightly open, he grabbed the dress and then threw it over the balcony, where someone else was there waiting to pick it up.
If that didn’t sound entertaining enough, the funny part comes in when the thief decided to take a few pearls to get it appraised and was met with an undesirable fact, the pearls are worthless! We guess the thief smartened up real quick and realized that it all was not worth going to jail over and returned it.
Francisco Costa, the designer of the dress, did not comment on the pearls but did have this to say, “All of us at Calvin Klein are thrilled. Once it’s returned to us, we will be able to have the dress restored and archived, as it now represents an important moment for the brand.”
Lupita is also happy that the dress has been returned and still considers the dress to be a “timeless and priceless piece of art”.
