A man walking past a Baltimore hospital captured something that broke his heart. He witnessed security guards from the University of Maryland Medical Center wheeling a patient to a bus stop in freezing temperatures and dumping her there in nothing but a hospital gown. No under garments. No shoes.
Imamu Baraka shared the moment on Facebook and asked, “Is this what healthcare in Baltimore City has come to?”
“It’s about 30 degrees out here right now,” he said in the video, before asking the woman if she needed him to call the police. According to CBS News, this practice is called “patient dumping” and it happens at hospitals across the country, normally when the patient is not insured or has financial issues.
In response, the hospital said they “share the shock and disappointment of many who have viewed the video” in a statement. “In the end we clearly failed to fulfill our mission with this patient.”
Like good samaritan Imamu Baraka said, we’ve got to do better in 2018!
