Whew, diversity in the workplace is really essential chile. According to CNN, a new study has found that black newborns in America are 3 times more likely to pass away when looked after by white doctors.
The study was published Monday in the journal ‘Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America’ (PNAS).
The study shows data of 1.8 million hospital births in Florida from 1992 to 2015 that was captured and analyzed by researchers from George Mason University.
The researchers found that the mortality rate for white babies was largely unaffected by the doctor’s race compared to their black counterparts, CNN reports.
“Strikingly, these effects appear to manifest more strongly in more complicated cases, and when hospitals deliver more Black newborns,” the authors of the study wrote. “The findings suggest that Black physicians outperform their White colleagues when caring for Black newborns.”
The authors also touched on racism, without assuming that being the reason of the findings.
“Taken with this work, it gives warrant for hospitals and other care organizations to invest in efforts to reduce such biases and explore their connection to institutional racism.”
“Reducing racial disparities in newborn mortality will also require raising awareness among physicians, nurses, and hospital administrators about the prevalence of racial and ethnic disparities,” they added.
