James Edwin Yokeley Jr., a North Carolina grandfather and now ex-election official, was arrested for allegedly spiking his granddaughters’ ice cream with illegal narcotics.

According to NBC News, Yokeley Jr. stopped at a Sheetz gas station earlier this month. There, he reportedly waved down a police officer to report that his “two juvenile granddaughters had found two hard objects” in their ice cream. Per the outlet, Yokeley had purchased the ice cream from a Dairy Queen four miles away from the gas station.
Ultimately, the pills, which weren’t ingested by the granddaughters, were tested and found to be illegal narcotics. According to CBS News, they were specifically found to contain cocaine and MDMA. Additionally, footage obtained from the Dairy Queen location showed that Yokeley Jr. placed the pills into each of his granddaughters’ ice cream.

According to NBC News, Yokelely Jr. was booked on “suspicion of contaminating food with a controlled substance and felony child abuse.” In addition, CBS News reports that he was also charged with “possession of a Schedule I narcotic.” Per the outlet, he was then transported to the New Hanover County Detention before ultimately posting a $100,000 secured bond.
Furthermore, NBC News notes that on Thursday, August 28, Yokely Jr. reportedly resigned from his position as chairman of the Surry County Board of Elections. In his now-public resignation letter, he seemingly alleged that he’s being “falsely accused.”
“This decision has not been made lightly. After much prayer, thoughtful reflection, and consultation, I have concluded that it’s in the best interest of the State Board of Elections, regarding my own falsely accused circumstances, to step down at this time,” he reportedly stated. “… Based on the truth and facts, I remain prayerfully confident that I will be exonerated of all accusations leveled against me.”
CBS News notes that the investigation into Yokely Jr. and the motive behind his alleged actions remains ongoing.
