Daryl Robert Harrison was convicted by a jury last week for scamming 14 people out of more than $800,000.
According to the Justice Department, the 40-year-old told people he was a Ghanaian prince and went by Prince Daryl R. Attipoe and Prophet Daryl R. Attipoe.
Harrison and his stepfather, awaiting trial, convinced people they were ministers with Power House of Prayer Ministries. CNN reports that this group financially supported “religious services in various church facilities and private residences” in Colorado and Ohio.
Harrison stated he had connections to mining and trucking companies in Africa. The Ohio man also told investors they would receive up to 33% on their investment within those companies.
The DOJ press release states that Harrison “failed to provide investors with interest payments, routinely terminated all communications with investors, ignored individual investor inquiries, and demands from investors seeking the return of investing monies.”
The 2020 indictment alleges that Harrison and his stepfather decided to “unjustly enrich themselves and PHOP by soliciting monies from investors using false and fraudulent pretenses, representations and converting those monies for defendants’ personal benefit and for the benefit of PHOP without the knowledge or authorization of the investors.”
Luxury cars and renting a house were among a few things bought with the money that Harrison obtained through scamming people for several years.
Harrison’s sentencing is later this year, and he faces 20 years.
