Officials confirmed Thursday that a 19-year-old is behind the fast-moving wildfire that tore through Ocean County, New Jersey, this week, scorching a whopping 15,000 acres and forcing around 5,000 residents to evacuate. Blaze Spreads Fast Amid Weather Conditions
In a statement released Thursday morning, Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer announced the arrest of Joseph Kling of Watertown, NJ, says ABC 7. The article further states that he was charged with aggravated arson and arson in connection with the wildfire that sparked up Tuesday morning.
According to the New Jersey Forest Fire Service’s Facebook page, the Jones Road Wildfire erupted early Tuesday morning in the Greenwood Forest Wildlife Management Area. The situation quickly escalated, fueled by dry conditions and strong winds. By Tuesday night, the fire had already consumed 8,500 acres. As of Thursday morning, emergency officials had the blaze 50% contained.
Fire crews continue to battle the flames on the ground and by air, to slow the spread and protect nearby communities. While no injuries have been reported, several businesses in Lacey Township’s industrial park have suffered damage, and the blaze has left more than 25,000 customers without power.
Additionally, all evacuation orders have been lifted for over 5,000 residents evacuated from affected areas on April 22. Emergency shelters are also set up for displaced residents. Only eight structures have been threatened as of Thursday morning. Furthermore, the incident comes as wildfire season ramps across the northeastern United States, where dry weather has heightened fire risks.
