Roommates, we are sending our prayers to the family and friends of a student that passed away this morning at Lake Mary High School.

According to WESH 2, the school was placed on lockdown Wednesday morning after the student passed away from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Seminole County Sheriff Dennis Lemma said the 17-year-old junior shot herself in the school’s auditorium.

Around 7:45 am she reportedly asked to leave class to go to the restroom. A teacher reported that the gunshot was heard about five minutes later.

The school was placed on a code red lockdown following the incident and parents were notified with a recorded call. Deputies notified the girl’s parents. Investigators are currently looking into how the girl obtained the handgun and how she was able to bring it onto campus.

Parents were allowed to pick up students following the incident, and students who drove themselves to school were granted an honor system to leave.

This is reportedly a second student suicide at a Central Florida school within the past year and a half.

We continue to send our prayers to the student’s family and the Lake Mary High School community.
