President Donald Trump has revoked Secret Service protection for former Vice President Kamala Harris, a senior White House official told the Associated Press. For context, former vice presidents typically get federal government protection for six months after leaving office. Meanwhile, ex-presidents do so for life.
The move to drop Harris’ Secret Service protection comes as the former vice president is about to embark on a book tour for her memoir. She plans to release’107 Days’ next month.
A senior Trump administration official said President Donald Trump issued the executive memorandum on Thursday to the Department of Homeland Security. The memo ends Harris’ security detail and security services. The Biden administration extended her Secret Service detail from six to 18 months. So, while it should have ended in July 2026, it will now be terminated on Monday. As of Sept. 1, that extension no longer applies, per POLITICO.
This isn’t the first time President Trump has cut Secret Service short for former White House officials or their relatives. In March, he announced via Truth Social that he was ending protection for the adult children of former President Joe Biden. Before leaving office in January, Biden had extended their protection until July. At the time, he said that Hunter Biden having “at least 18 people” on his detail while in South Africa was “ridiculous.” Ashley, who he said had 13 agents, also had her services chopped. President Trump also cut protection for Anthony Fauci in March.
Last year was a particularly politically charged environment. Trump faced two assassination attempts, and the Secret Service played a crucial role in protecting the now-president. In addition to her book tour, Harris recently announced she will not run for governor next year.
