R. Kelly‘s daughter Buku Abi has spoken on misconceptions regarding her and her dad’s relationship following her previously accusing him of sexual assault.
On Thursday, January 8, a new episode of Reginae Carter’s sit-down series, ‘Heir Time,’ was released via YouTube. Furthermore, the episode featured Buku Abi as a guest. Additionally, about ten minutes into the episode, Carter asked Abi to share something that “people don’t know” about her mom and dad that she’d like them to know.
“Well, one [thing] Imma look at the camera when I say this I love my father, okay? It’s a big misconception that there’s hate or, like, animosity towards him it’s none of that. At the end of the day, I went through what I went through [and] my family went through what they went through [and] I’m gonna hold people accountable. However, that does not reflect how I feel about that man,” she said.
Ultimately, Abi reiterated that she loves her dad and supports him as “the artist that he is.”
“But as a human being, you have a responsibility to uphold, and that’s that,” she stated.
Abi also spoke about her mother, Dreak Kelly, saying she loves the person she’s become and noted that her family is a very “genuine” unit.
Social media users entered TSR’s comment section, sharing thoughts on Buku Abi’s response about her and R. Kelly’s relationship.
According to PEOPLE, ‘R. Kelly’s Karma: A Daughter’s Journey’ aired in October 2024. In the two-part series, Buku Abi shared that she was allegedly abused by her dad when she was a child. Additionally, she explained that she informed her mother of the abuse in 2009, when she was 10 years old.
“He was my everything. For a long time, I didnt even want to believe that it happened. I didnt know that even if he was a bad person that he would do something to me. I was too scared to tell anybody. I was too scared to tell my mom… I really feel like that one millisecond completely just changed my whole life and changed who I was as a person and changed the sparkle I had and the light I used to carry. After I told my mom, I didnt go over there anymore; my brother and sister, we didnt go over there anymore. And even up until now, I struggle with it a lot,” she said.
Per Abi, the abuse allegedly occurred when she was eight or nine. Specifically, she said that she woke up to Kelly “touching” her.
“And I didnt know what to do, so I just kind of laid there, and I pretended to be asleep,” she said.
Kelly’s lawyer denied the accusations against the singer. Meanwhile, after the series aired, Abi clarified his stance on her father.
