We’re just a few weeks away from the 2022 Grammys and Saweetie, who raked in two Grammy nominations, recently opened up about the obstacles she’s faced on her journey to becoming an artist who is recognized for her work.
While she’s grateful for the acknowledgement, Saweetie revealed that she was in shock when she learned she was up for best new artist and best rap song for her collab with Doja Cat.
“When you work really hard, it’s always nice to get acknowledged,” Saweetie said on PEOPLE’s Every Day podcast. She added that she was “in shock” when the nominations rolled out and her name was on the list! She also recalled the moment in an interview with Elle magazine.
“I was actually sleeping. I wasn’t aware they were coming out the next morning, so I woke up to a lot of missed calls and text messages of congrats. So I think that was a moment within itself, and I’m just so grateful to be acknowledged,” she said.
Saweetie also opened up about how difficult it is for an artist to create a thriving career, despite how “glamorous” stardom may look.
“I just feel like as artists, you know, we have it tough,” she told PEOPLE. “I feel like we have all the spotlight on us and people think that it’s glamorous when in all actuality there are a lot of difficult things that happen behind the scenes.”
She continued saying, “Hopefully you have a great team. Hopefully the creatives that you’re working with aren’t overcharging you. It’s like everyone who’s around, you have to pay for this. You have to pay for that.”
The year has been good to Saweetie so far, as she recently took home Billboard’s 2022 game changer award for her contributions to music! As we previously reported, Saweetie accepted the award with her beautiful mom beside her, and thanked her fans for their continued support.
