On Monday, June 24, an interview with Lucille and Steph Curry’s mother, Sonya, was published via YouTube. The mothers appeared as guests on ‘Sway In The Morning.’
About 30 minutes into the interview, the show’s host, Sway Calloway, asked Lucille what it was like meeting Henderson for the first time. Additionally, Calloway appeared curious about how the mothers adopted their sons having a new, important woman in their lives.
“Well, before then, I had already gotten to the place where my place is secure. I don’t care who he marry or who he gets with; I know my place, and I’m secure in it,” Lucille explained. “But it’s hard to see them go into a relationship, and somehow you may feel, maybe that might not be the right relationship.”
However, Lucille explained that as a parent, you have to “step back and let it happen.”
“And I tell a lot of the mothers, we’re going to remain their mothers as long as they live. We are not their girlfriends, so I’m safe in my place,” Lucille concluded.
At that point, Sonya stepped in to add that she prays for her children’s significant others daily. The mother shared that she even looks at her children’s husbands and wives like her own children.

The Former Couple Recently Made Headlines
As The Shade Room previously reported, Shaq and Shaunie Henderson’s former marriage has seemingly been a hot topic since May. At the time, Henderson released her latest novel, ‘Undefeated: Changing the Rules and Winning On My Own Terms.’
In the book, Henderson — who is now married to Pastor Keion Henderson — wrote about being unsure if she was “ever really in love” with Shaq.
“Looking back, I don’t know that I was ever really in love with the man, but I was in love with the idea of being married to the man I had a family with,” Henderson wrote.
Shortly after, Shaq took to social media to convey his understanding of his ex-wife’s sentiments. To note, in 2022, the former NBA baller admitted that he didn’t do a good job of “protecting” his union with Henderson, per The Shade Room.
However, although Shaq was understanding of his ex-wife’s words, social media users were largely puzzled, per The Shade Room. At the time, one Instagram user @bfg_funny reacted to Henderson’s revelation with, “So just a few kids with a man you didn’t love… that’s crazy.”
On May 10, Henderson clarified her comments about her former marriage in an exclusive interview with PEOPLE. She explained that the book is her “truth,” and social media users took her words “out of context.”
“My book is my truth… There was no context to just that one quote that I said, and I think that, sadly, people are taking my words out of context,” Henderson explained. “…When you love somebody, you love somebody, but to be in love with somebody is a different feeling, and I will be honest, I didn’t realize that until I found the love of my life right now…”
At this time, Henderson has not publicly reacted to her former mother-in-law’s comments.
