Thousands of protesters took to the streets of Sacramento late Friday and early Saturday morning as new information about the police killing of an unarmed African American man whose life was tragically cut short earlier this month.
According to The NY Times, an independent autopsy conduncted by Dr. Bennet Omalu revealed that Stephon was shot eight times, raising questions about the police account that said he was a threat to officers when they arrived on the scene.
Stephon was shot three times in his lower back, twice near his right shoulder, once in his neck and once under an armpit. He was also hit in the leg as well. Dr. Omalu also revealed that the gun shot wound Stephon had in the front of his leg appeared to have hit him as he was falling to the ground.
“He was shot from the back,” Dr. Omalu said
He said he believed that the first bullet that hit Stephon on his side is what caused him to turn around towards the officers.
The family’s lawyer Benjamin Crump says the independent autopsy contradicts the police claims that he was a threat.
“These findings from the independent autopsy contradict the police narrative that we’ve been told,” he said. “This independent autopsy affirms that Stephon was not a threat to police and was slain in another senseless police killing.”
