SZA Reveals Her Ankle Is Broken Following Her GRAMMY Win (Video)

The good always outweighs the bad! Yesterday was the 64th annual GRAMMY Awards, and folks aren’t over talking about the eventful night—specifically SZA! She and Doja Cat snagged their first award for best pop duo-group performance for “Kiss Me More!” During the event, they both trended online as fans talked about Doja running from the restroom to accept the award and SZA hobbling onstage using crutches.

While SZA tried her best not to allow the crutches to outshine her, she shared that the injury was more severe than expected. Today she revealed that her ankle was broken, although she initially thought it was sprained. “Chipped the corner of my ankle bone right off doing nothing,” she wrote on her Instagram story.

The “I hate you” singer spoke to Billboard yesterday, explaining how her ankle got injured. “It’s very funny because I fell out of bed right before it was time to leave and get ready for this,” she said. “Like the day before, but that’s the way it goes. Everything awesome in my life has always come with something like very random, but it just adds to the energy.”

Punch, the president of SZA’s label Top Dawg Entertainment, also confirmed the news yesterday, tweeting that she almost didn’t attend the show. “Crazy day, man. SZA twisted her ankle the night before the awards, really hours before. She almost canceled,” Punch wrote. “It was super inspiring to see her power thru and make it at the tail end of the red carpet and then go up on stage with crutches to get the trophy with Doja. Salute.”

Although SZA is injured, she seems to be in good spirits. Six hours before she revealed her health status, she wrote a message thanking God, the ancestors, her team, and Doja for supporting her win. We’re wishing you a speedy recovery, SZA!
