Roommates, it’s been nearly three months since the deadly crowd surge that occurred at the Astroworld festival in Houston that left ten dead and thousands injured. Hundreds of lawsuits have been filed against Live Nation and Travis Scott over the deadly music festival. New reports show that instead of nearly 400 individual lawsuits, a Texas court panel has formally approved the lawsuit to be rolled into one.

According to Billboard, on January 26th, Texas Judicial Panel On Multidistrict Litigation (MDL) granted a joint motion from both victims and organizers to combine the lawsuit before a single judge for all pre-trial proceedings. The new case will include at least 387 separate lawsuits representing nearly 2,800 alleged victims. Those suits claim Live Nation, Travis, and other organizers were legally negligent in planning and conducting Astroworld. The victims and their families are seeking billions in total damages.

Reports also show multidistrict litigation is standard procedure in mass injury lawsuits. The goal is to avoid the inefficiency of individually trying many cases that share key similarities. This process seems to allow a single judge to coordinate the cases to streamline complex pre-trial procedures like discovery, which is the process of handing over evidence.

In addition, it may make it easier to negotiate a single settlement. Billboard also shows that both parties agreed upon the new move towards a single case. Attorneys for both sides wrote that this type of litigation is exactly what the Texas MDL process is designed to address. As of now, the order did not disclose which Texas state judge would handle the case, but in their joint filings, attorneys for the victims and the organizers requested Judge Lauren Reeder. Reports did not clarify when Judge Reeder was their choice. Roomies, we will keep you updated as more information comes available.
