Teyana Taylor Explains Her Decision To Retire From Music: “I Gotta Do It For My Mental Health So I Can Stay Alive For My Kids”

Now y’all know Teyana Taylor is a woman of many talents and she has made a mark on the entertainment industry over the past 15 years. From dancing, to fashion, modeling and overall entertaining, Teyana is nothing to play with! Unfortunately after doing some soul searching, she says she is ready to let go of one of her passions–making music.

Just a few days ago, Teyana shocked fans when she alluded to retiring from music in a post on her Instagram page. Well, it looks like she is putting the mic down formal, y’all, and she took to IG live to explain her decision.

“So I’m retiring this chapter of my story with the comfort that I can depart with peace of mind seeing that all the hard work and passion put was indeed loved & supported somewhere in the world!” Teyana said in the initial post.

While addressing her fans on live, she makes it clear that her decision has nothing to do with her album not being nominated for a Grammy, but explains that she has felt unsupported and unappreciated by her label.

“I’m just tired baby, and it’s not to throw anybody under the bus but I do feel like the majority of what that post was, was toward my label that I’ve been signed to for almost 10 years,” Teyana says. “Everything that you guys see of me, everything that I put out, everything that I do is 100% me. Yes, I am going to feel under-appreciated if I’m putting in 110% and my label is reciprocating 10% of that.”

She goes on to say that the lack of support from her label has caused her a lot of stress, and she feels that she needs to let go of the career before it becomes a risk to her mental health.

“I constantly feel alone, I constantly feel unappreciated, I constantly feel failed because there’s literally no push. The crazy part about it is I asked Def Jam to drop me on almost 10 different occasions because at this point I can’t let this kill me,” she says. “And granted to my fans, I feel like it’s a little tiny bit selfish to say ‘what about your fans, do it for your fans’. I have to do it for my mental health, I have to do it for my emotional health. I have to do it so I can stay alive for my kids.”

Teyana’s most recent album, The Album, gained lots of positive attention from fans and some of Teyana’s peers, and she expressed her disappointment with not being nominated for a Grammy on social media.

How do y’all feel about Tey stepping away from music?
