Whew! Things are getting real! Will Smith continues to be a hot topic after he slapped Chris Rock during last night’s Oscars. While the two men haven’t broken their silence about the incident, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has. They issued a statement condemning the actions of the Best Actor winner for his role in the film ‘King Richard.’
According to CNN, the statement read, “The Academy condemns the actions of Mr. Smith at last night’s show. We have officially started a formal review around the incident and will explore further action and consequences in accordance with our Bylaws, Standards of Conduct, and California law.”
While it’s unclear how long the process will take to review the incident, it was revealed earlier in the day that the Academy leadership “strongly considered” removing Will from the Oscars telecast after the incident. Says a source close to the situation.
The source advised, “Academy leadership strongly considered removing Will Smith from last night’s broadcast following the incident.” The source added, “There were immediate discussions, but the Academy decision-makers were seated in various spots in the Dolby Theater and couldn’t mobilize to make a decision before he won best actor.” The conversation around the incident doesn’t seem like it will be dying down soon.
Although Will apologized to the Academy and his fellow nominees during his acceptance speech, some feel like it wasn’t enough and the investigation is warranted. One Roommate commented, “As they should! They should have escorted him out of the building. Venus and Serena should have accepted it on Will’s behalf.” Another commented, “I understand both sides, but who is the victim here, and why nobody checked on Chris Rock?”
