#JadaPinkettSmith, her mother, #AdrienneBanfieldNorris, and #WillowSmith had a conversation almost every family or group of friends has had at least once. The conversation regarding black women and white women. They spoke about privilege, experiences and more.
Jada and Adrienne recalled a moment where Adrienne told her, “You have to learn to get along with white people, but don’t ever bring them home.” Also referencing a white boyfriend Jada had back in the day. Jada spoke about how she’s separated how she feels about white men, and white women, stating that women go through the same struggles. Jada also spoke about how she felt a way toward white women with blonde hair—then had a ki that both she and her mum have blonde hair.
“I have an issue, because I feel like black women have been brainwashed into only acccepting the European idea of what beauty is,” Adrienne said. “Now, we can’t have anything to ourselves that we can call our own because they’ve got tanning booths—now they’re tryna get brown, they’re putting injections in their lips, they’re putting injections in their behinds, and we—we were ridiculed for that [natural features] for years.” Whew chile…
Adrienne then mentioned how she feels as though black men are disregarding black women–and Jada was quick to respond to that comment by basically saying that that’s not on her [the white woman]–that’s on the black man. She expressed how she’s sick and tired of people blaming men’s actions on women, and all I can say is ‘whew chile, the tea!’
They even brought out one of their producers, a white woman, to continue on the discussion of trying to understand each other better. That’s not the only person they brought out as diversity educator, Jane Elliot, had a seat at the table too!!
