The GRAMMYs Address Black Representation In 2020 Nominees | Exclusive

Roommates, we’ve received an exclusive statement from The Black Music Collective at the Recording Academy addressing the representation of black artists for the 2020 GRAMMY nominations.

The statement reads that “black music is not a monolith” and they add that it’s a historic year for GRAMMY nominations.

“It’s a historic year as 10 black women are nominated in the top four categories and more than 20 black nominees are represented in the general fields,” the statement reads. “Also, for the first time, all 6 nominees for Best Rap Album are black independent artists. This is progress.”

As we previously reported, a lot of artists are not here for this year’s GRAMMY nominations as they feel as though there is a lack of representation for black artists.

Earlier today, Drake shared his piece on the GRAMMYs and award shows in general.

The Weeknd shared that he’d been collaborating with the GRAMMYs for a possible performance–but was still left out of the nominations.  Many people feel as though The Weeknd deserved to be nominated, and was snubbed this time around.
