The State Of Louisiana Botched Tax Returns, Expects Residents To Pay Back The $26 Million The State Overpaid

Whew, chile! This Mercury Retrograde even has computers acting up. The state of #Louisiana announced that a computer error accidentally gave some people double the refund they expected, according to @abcnews.

So if you’re from Louisiana and your refund was looking a lil fatter than what you thought it would be, this may apply to you. Louisiana officials expect that money back and have already begun recouping what amounted to $26 million in duplicate refunds!

And in case the residents who have received the extra money claim they have already spent that cash and can’t give it back, the government is basically Shannon Sharpe on ‘em, (that ain’t no problem, that ain’t no problem) because most accidental refunds will be recovered electronically by banks that will withdraw the direct deposits.

“There is no need for the taxpayers to take any action as the department works to recover the overpayment of funds directly from their bank accounts,” Commissioner of Administration Jay Dardenne said in a statement Friday. “With the cooperation of several financial institutions, the process is working.”

According to the state, refunds that were processed correctly on March 12 were accidentally deposited again the following day. The mistake affected both direct deposit refunds and debit card refunds.

The computer error affect about 66,700 individual taxpayers, according to a news release.

“If the state is unable to recover the refunds directly from the banking institutions, those taxpayers will receive a letter from the Department of Revenue with repayment instructions,” the Division of Administration said in its release.

The state said it is “implementing procedures to prevent any recurrences” of the mistake moving forward.

Let’s hope that is the case for this current tax season and the next because I know a lot of residents are highly upset right now that their pockets just got a little lighter.
