According to court documents, #DerekChauvin will head to trial in 2021.
Judge Peter Cahill set a date of March 8th for the trial of officer Derek Chauvin—former officer accused of kneeling on #GeorgeFloyd’s neck—ultimately causing him to succumb to his death. The location of the trial is said to be “determined at a later date.”
Though court docs show all defendants are scheduled to appear in court on that day, whether or not they’ll be tried together or separately will also be “determined at a later date.”
Also according to documents, the questionnaire for the jury is expected by November 1st, 2020, in order to proceed with juror selection.
Most recently J. Alexander Kueng’s mother revealed that Kueng joined the force to stop discrimination.
In a private conversation with his mother, Kueng expressed that change had to come from within the establishment.
“He said, ‘Don’t you think that needs to be done from the inside?’” his mother, Joni Kueng, recalled him saying after he watched protesters block a highway years ago. “That’s part of the reason why he wanted to become a police officer — and a black police officer on top of it — is to bridge that gap in the community, change the narrative between the officers and the black community.”
Since his arrest, the family has been trying to understand exactly what happened.
“It’s a gut punch,” Ms. Kueng said. “Here you are, you’ve raised this child, you know who he is inside and out. We’re such a racially diverse family. To be wrapped up in a racially motivated incident like this is just unfathomable”. Joni also stated that his sister was changing her last name because of this incident.
Kueng was also spotted shopping at a local Cub Foods in Minnesota and he was confronted by another shopper who noticed him. Angry like many other people following the death of Floyd, the shopper stopped him, and he let her know that he was definitely who she thought he was.
When the woman who stopped him continued to shame him for comfortably shopping as if he was not one of the people responsible for Floyd’s death, Kueng said that he wouldn’t consider his trip to the store comfortably shopping, but he was picking up some necessities.
The woman continued to follow him as he approached the check-out line, and she eventually caught the attention of other shoppers as she let them know he was one of the officers charged for Floyd’s death.
As we previously reported, Derek Chauvin is on trial for second-degree murder. His counterparts—Thao, Kueng, and Lane will be tried for aiding and abetting second-degree murder.
