#TSRPositiveImages: 31-Year Old Nigerian Doctor Opens Up Her Own Emergency Room!

Hey, Roommates! So, recently, we learned of a Nigerian sistah who is making some big moves in Houstin, TX. Meet Dr. Foyekemi Ikyaator, or Dr. Foye (fo-yay) for short! She and her husband just opened up a stand-alone emergency room in northwest Houston this past December! Raised in the states, Dr. Foye was always encouraged to care for other people and being that her academics were treated as a top priority, this young woman graduated from the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health.

Once Dr. Foye completed her residency in Emergency Medicine at the Emory School of Medicine and Public Health here in Atlanta, she moved to Houston in order to pursue her passion of public health. She worked very closely with the St. Luke’s Health System, but then decided that she could branch out on her own! “In the emergency room you can see between 20 and 30 patients within a shift and [there] is just enough time to treat them and get them to their next point of care,” she says. That is why she started Life Savers Emergency Room!

Since Dr. Foye is an ER doctor, that just means that she’s able to provide her patients with extra care during their visits and since it’s her business, she can be as generous as she’d like to be with her patients. Dr. Foye has been able to provide people with access to healthcare if they can’t afford it or have limitations within their healthcare plans as she is able to treat many other ailments and diseases such as depression, high blood pressure and even diabetes! The Ikyaators believe that a stand-alone ER creates a more relaxed environment as well. I mean, who’s absolutely terrified of going to the doctor? *raises hand*

Houston Profile Magazine writes:

“Today, Dr. Foye directs the free-standing Life Savers Emergency Room where she can take more time with her patients and counsel them on specific needs as well as promote the kind of medicine that she believes is necessary in today’s community.

Life Savers ER is here for community as a whole; patients and medical professionals alike. Dr. Foye is in tune with her colleagues who wish to practice medicine under a non-restrictive bureaucracy so board certified doctors, nurses and practitioners can be flexible with the time and resources needed to care for people in need.”

Dr. Foye is such an inspiration! Nobody told her to go start an emergency room, but her dedication to helping people is what motivated her to start her business. She is a black woman, wife and mother that is breaking down barriers in the healthcare industry. Dr. Foye is also setting an excellent example, as well as a very high standard, for our young back youth. You can do this one day if you want to, young Roommates!

The ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place on January 15th and you are all encouraged to come out! It will take place at Life Savers Emergency room located 17685 Tomball Parkway.
