Kevin Durant continues to give back to his community in a major way. Earlier this week he opened “The Durant Center” in his hometown of Prince George County, Md.
According to Sports Illustrated, the facility is geared towards “helping low-income and underserved students enroll and graduate from college.”
The after-school facility opened on Wednesday with an inaugural class of 69 local students that will be offered multiple academic, financial and social-emotional resources to help with college and career development.
KD helped create the educational facility in partnership with College Track, which uses a 10-year plan to help students from their early teen years through college graduation by offering tutoring services and college scholarships.
Kevin said to the Washington Post, “The full circle stuff that you dream about. So many people that meant so much to me at that time, and to see my name on the building. Hopefully, that inspires kids in the area.”
For over the past 10 years, Kevin has pledged $10 million to College Track, and when he visited one of their centers in Oakland, he decided to collaborate with them to open a facility in his hometown, making it the first site in the east coast.
Elissa Salas, the chief executive of College Track said, “It wasn’t so much that he didn’t want to do something in the Bay, but he was looking to really invest really deeply in his home community.” The grand opening of “The Durant Center” took place on Wednesday during the Warriors visit to Washington D.C. to face the Wizards.
