Identical twin sisters, Shera Grant and Shanta Owens have been granted many identical blessings over the years. Now at 38, Grant will be joining her twin, Owens as a district court judge in Alabama!
These ladies have been living almost inseparable lives, its almost crazy how “twinsync” they are! It’s almost mind-boggling that this can even occur, not only for their duty to work in the public service, but their personal lives are damn near twinning too!
Grant and Owens both graduated from Alabama State University for their undergrad and in the end graduated at Louisiana State University for their Law degree! These Twins even have husbands who’ve been best buddies since Kindergarten and they even share same-aged kids: Both a girl and a boy! Their girls are 6 years-old and four months apart and their boys are 3 years-old and also four months apart!! Weird right!?
The only thing that has separated the two was when Grant moved to Atlanta after law school and Owens decided to stay in her hometown of Birmingham, Alabama. Now they are back in-action—I mean court action, to serve their district together in Alabama!
Once Alabama Governor, Robert Bentley appointed Owens to replace former district judge, Jack Lowther after he retired last Friday, it was only right that the twin sisters play the same role in Alabama.
“I’m just overwhelmed, overjoyed…I think this is a wonderful opportunity to serve the citizens of this county,” said Grant.
According to alabama.com, she will be taking on small civil cases as a district court judge. Owens will start her position on Jan. 25, but until then she is currently a Jefferson County Public Defender and continues to serve for the Vestavia Hills Board of Education.
“I checked with several of our tenured members, and we are not aware of identical twins sitting simultaneously on Jefferson County’s District or Circuit courts,” said Bo Landrum, executive director of the Birmingham Bar Association.
“Ms. Grant is highly qualified, motivated and prepared to be a district judge,” said Jennifer Ardis, communications director for Bentley. “The governor’s office found out about her twin sister during the interview process. Public service seems to be a trait that runs in her family.”
They grew up surrounded around fundamental activities. Their mother continuously made them read books when they were young. Sadly, their father won’t get to see this exciting memory of today, since he passed away when they were very young.
“I’m really elated … I’m excited for her,” said Owens. ”We’re grateful to God and grateful to the Governor…I know she’ll continue to be that person because that’s how we were raised.”
Shanta Owens who is already a district court judge of Alabama since 2008. Now with her twin by her side too she is serving in her second term, but will be running for re-election in 2020.
