After a video of girl crying after being asked to leave school for wearing braids in #Louisiana went viral, her parents took the issue to court. Now a district judge has sided with the girl’s family by blocking #ChristTheKingElementarySchool in #Terrytown from enforcing their “natural hair” policy, The Grio reports.
The school says 11-year-old Faith Kennedy and another girl were removed from class and accused of violating a rule that prohibits “extensions, wigs and hairpieces of any kind.” The lawsuit against the school accuses the institution of discrimination, claiming the policy has a “disparate impact” on black female students.
The lawsuit also says that only black girls have been inspected and punished for wearing extensions. The families believe the school’s policy could result in “clear irreparable harm” if the girls are not allowed to complete the school year with their peers.
Catholic Schools Superintendent RaeNell Billiot Houston said the school’s staff continues to reach out to Faith’s family and attorneys with the goal of having her return to school.
