A #Michigan jury has found #JeffereyZeigler, the man who shot at 14-year-old Brennan Walker who sought help because he got lost on his way to school, guilty.
The incident, which took place back in April, sparked national outrage because the boy showed up at Zeigler’s #RochesterHills door simply seeking directions to his school after he woke up late and missed his bus and Zeigler shot at the boy as he ran away.
Zeigler was found guilty by a jury in Oakland County Circuit Court of assault with intent to commit great bodily harm less than murder and possession of a firearm, according to @detroitnews. Now Zeigler had been charged with assault with intent to commit murder, but #JudgeWendyPotts gave jurors the option of convicting Zeigler on the lesser charge.
He could face up to 10 years in prison for the assault conviction, plus a mandatory two years for the firearm charge. Potts revoked his bond and ordered him to jail until sentencing on November 13th.
According to reports from the scene, after the verdict was announced, Lisa Wright, Walker’s mother, was consoled by several friends who escorted her out a back door. She sniffled and sobbed frequently during the trial, especially when surveillance camera videos of her son were played for jurors.
Zeigler’s attorney maintains his client did not have the intent to kill Brennan and Zeigler testified that he was attempting to get off a warning shot.
A home surveillance video captured Zeigler stepping out and pointing the weapon at Brennan running down the driveway and then lowering it when it didn’t fire and disengaging the safety, raising it again and firing off one round. Deputies later encountered Brennan shaken up and tearful on a nearby street.
