Roommates, Twitter has officially decided to lock Trump’s account for 12 hours due to his recent tweets following the violent mob of his supporters who stormed the U.S. Capitol. Twitter stated that if Trump continues to post problematic tweets, his account will be permanently suspended.
After he posted a since-deleted video addressing his supporters and a series of tweets with endless false claims about the election being stolen, Twitter said it had locked Trump’s account for 12 hours, and warned for the first time that it may suspend him permanently. The temporary lock reflects Trump’s violation of the Twitter rules, the company said.
Twitter posted the following:
“As a result of the unprecedented and ongoing violent situation in Washington, D.C., we have required the removal of three @realDonaldTrump Tweets that were posted earlier today for repeated and severe violations of our Civic Integrity policy. Future violations of the Twitter Rules, including our Civic Integrity or Violent Threats policies, will result in permanent suspension of the @realDonaldTrump account. Our public interest policy — which has guided our enforcement action in this area for years — ends where we believe the risk of harm is higher and/or more severe.”
Twitter’s statement continued, adding:
“We’ll continue to evaluate the situation in real time, including examining activity on the ground and statements made off Twitter. We will keep the public informed, including if further escalation in our enforcement approach is necessary. This means that the account of @realDonaldTrump will be locked for 12 hours following the removal of these Tweets. If the Tweets are not removed, the account will remain locked.”
The announcement marks a major escalation by Twitter against Trump’s account and responds to calls by civil rights groups for Trump to be banned from the platform.
