Now, this is not the kind of turbulence anybody signed up for. What started as a normal night at New Yorks LaGuardia Airport quickly turned into an unexpected runway situation that had passengers shook flight crews scrambling, and the NTSB pulling up with a full investigation team. And lets just say… this wasnt a baggage mix-up.
According to officials, two Delta regional jets operated by Endeavor Air collided on the taxiway Wednesday night (October 1) in whats being described as a low-speed but still very real crash. One jet, arriving from Charlotte, was stationary when the wing of another preparing for takeoff to Roanoke clipped the cockpit window, causing visible damage and sending one flight attendant to the hospital with a knee injury. Passengers say the pilot tried to brake, but the hit was unavoidable.
The NTSB has already recovered the flight recorders and is digging into what went wrong especially since flight 5155 was reportedly told to hold position by air traffic control. Both planes were evacuated safely, and Delta is cooperating fully, offering passengers meals and hotel stays. Thankfully, airport operations werent disrupted but the nerves of everyone onboard? Shaken, not stirred.
Social media wasted no time chiming in in the CNN comment section after news of the Delta taxiway crash hit the timeline. Some folks are sending prayers to the passengers and crew, while others are side-eyeing those recent government layoffs, saying this is exactly how stuff like this happens. And of course, a few seasoned flyers took the moment to remind yallonce againto keep that seatbelt on until the plane comes to a full stop.
One Instagram user @wanderingkaneesha wrote, “So next time you ask ‘why we have to keep the seatbelts on if were already landed?’ Now you know! Safe flying“
This Instagram user @pravi9 said, “Didn’t Trump and DOGE fire 50% of control tower staff members…“
Meanwhile, Instagram user @kimberly_m_bonilla added, “‘We apologize to our customers for the experience’”
While Instagram user @_icha_ shared, “Not something I want to read while sitting in a plane ”
Instagram user @lisavettech wrote, “How the F does this happen with modern technology?!?! ”
Finally, Instagram user @imjdesiree commented, “Prayers up for everyone involved.“
Following the incident, officials spoke out with an update, offering early details on the investigation and what happens next. The National Transportation Safety Board confirmed theyve already taken action. Furthermore, Delta addressed the situation publicly and expressed concern for passengers and crew. Here’s what both had to say in the aftermath:
The NTSB dispatched a team of 10 to LaGuardia, spokesman Eric Weiss said in a statement. Flight recorders from both airplanes have been recovered and are now at NTSB headquarters in Washington for readout and analysis.
Additionally, Delta Airlines released a statement that read,
Delta will work with all relevant authorities to review what occurred as safety of our customers and people comes before all else. We apologize to our customers for the experience.”
