Two Louisville Officers Wounded By Gunfire During Protests Following Breonna Taylor Verdict

Louisville is in a state of unrest as protesters continue to demand justice for Breonna Taylor. In the aftermath of Wednesday’s decision to not charge the officers with Breonna’s death, protests erupted onto the streets of Louisville where two Louisville Metro Police Department officers were shot and wounded.

One person is in custody, according to officials, as the officers recover at a Louisville hospital. The shots rang out around 8:30 p.m., according to a report from WKYT.

“Both officers are currently undergoing treatment at University Hospital,” LMPD Interim Chief Rob Schroeder said at a news conference around 10:15 p.m. Wednesday. “One is alert and stable. One is undergoing surgery and is stable.”

Schroeder, who said he wasn’t releasing the names of the officers, added that “one person is in custody,” but he declined to release the person’s identity.

It’s not actually clear if the shooting was related to any protests but videos circulating on social media showed protesters running away from the sound of nearby gunfire.

A curfew was placed on the city as protesters squared off with officers late Wednesday night. There was no immediate word on the number of arrests made Wednesday.

“I am very concerned about the safety of our officers,” Schroeder said.

The FBI tweeted that it is assisting LMPD in the shooting investigation.

Trump got fired up over the protests and made a few tweets in response to what was going on.

One officer, Brett Hankison, was indicted on three counts of wanton endangerment for his part in the raid on Breonna Taylor’s home on March 13. He fired 10 shots from outside her apartment, several of which ended up going into adjacent units, which is why he was charged with wanton endangerment.
