Marcus Owens, an African American freshmen at the University of Iowa, admitted to lying about being attacked by three white men, and throwing racial slurs, after police investigated the incident a lot further.
Initially, the 19-year-old boy had told police that on April 30 he was beaten relentlessly by three white men, which left him with severe blood clot damage to his eye, two broken front teeth and a cut on his lip.
Marcus’ claims were soon tested once police hosted a two-week investigation, which revealed that he was the aggressor all along.
According to Bossip, on Tues. May 17, investigators found out that during the week of May 1, Owens and a group of his friends provoked several altercations that continued in the downtown streets near the campus. One of the fights involved them beating “the snot out of” someone who called a man a “racial epithet.”
Owens was indeed drunk once starting a fight that lead him punching and pushing a victim in front of the bar.
An apology letter was released from the department: “Marcus Owens and the entire Owens family would like to issue their deepest apologies to Marcus’s friends, the Iowa City community, the University of Iowa, and the Iowa City Police Department for the misunderstandings and anxiety stemming from Marcus’s involvement in a violent incident in downtown Iowa City on May 1,” the letter said. “Just as we have learned many life-changing lessons, we hope too that the community will continue to examine the many issues raised by this unfortunate incident.”
Owens will not be charged or granted restitution for the damages and investigation of the case because it is not worth the battle for the quiet town near the campus.
