Video Game Addiction Reportedly Considered A Mental Health Disorder

Video Game Addiction Reportedly Considered A Mental Health Disorder

#Roommates, mental health is a serious topic that should be treated as such. With that being said, “gaming disorder” will reportedly be considered a mental health disorder, according to Who (World Health Organization).

The disorder has reportedly been added to the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, which officially goes into effect in January of 2022.

Apparently, gaming disorder is described as recurrent video game playing that leads to “impaired control over gaming” and an “increasing priority given to gaming to the extent that gaming takes precedence over other life interests and daily activities,” despite “the occurrence of negative consequences.”

With the announcement, there has been pushback from other clinically trained doctors and psychiatrics. The American Psychiatric Association claims there isn’t “sufficient evidence” to consider gaming addiction as a
“unique mental disorder.” There has been research documenting cases where people have played video games for up to 20 hours a day to the detriment of eating, sleeping or in some cases keeping a job.

Roommates, with this new diagnosis do you think it will help those who may show signs of being addicted to video games or do you think there isn’t enough information to create this new mental disorder? We want to hear from you Roommates!
