Walmart Announces The End Of All Handgun & Ammunition Sales

After a string of deadly mass shootings, popular retailer Walmart is making a decision that many believe should have occurred years ago. The discount chain has officially decided to end all sales of handguns and ammunition.

Despite there being many instances of mass shooters obtaining their firearms from Walmart, as well as openly brandishing the weapons while inside stores, Walmart has never moved to stop selling firearms or ammunition…until now. As reported by @CNN, the decision comes one month after the deadly mass shooting at a Walmart in El Paso, Texas that left 20 people dead.

Walmart, America’s largest retailer, said it will completely stop the sale of handgun ammunition and ammunition commonly used in assault-style weapons after selling all of its current inventory. Additionally, the company is also terminating the sale of handguns in all Alaska stores, the only state where it actually still sells handguns. Walmart customers without permits will also be forbidden to openly carry guns, even in states where open carry laws are legal.

Walmart CEO Doug McMillon had this to say regarding the new decision:

“We encourage our nation’s leaders to move forward and strengthen background checks and to remove weapons from those who have been determined to pose an imminent danger. Congress and the administration should act. Given our decades of experience selling firearms, we are also offering to serve as a resource in the national debate on responsible gun sales.

It’s clear to us that the status quo is unacceptable. We will treat law-abiding customers with respect, and we will have a very non-confrontational approach. Our remaining assortment will be even more focused on the needs of hunting and sport shooting enthusiasts. We understand that heritage, our deeply rooted place in America and our influence as the world’s largest retailer. And we understand the responsibility that comes with it.”

It’s important to note that Walmart will still continue to sell long barrel deer rifles, shotguns and the ammunition for those guns. Customers with permits for concealed carry will also still be welcomed inside stores.
