#Roommates, the coronavirus may have suspended the traditional movie-going experience as theaters continue to be closed—but Walmart is officially coming to the rescue to save the summer. According to new reports, Walmart is set to transform its store parking lots into drive-in movie theaters at hundreds of locations across the country this summer.
@People reports, earlier this week Walmart announced an official partnership with Tribeca Enterprises that will transform 160 participating Walmart parking lots across the country into drive-in movie theaters. Beginning this August and running through October, there will be a total of 320 movie showings, complete with car-side food and beverage service. Although an illustration of what the drive-in theaters will look like has been released—pertinent details such as the list of locations, dates and movie titles have not yet been made available.
On the new website created for the drive-in experience, Walmart described it as the “most amazing family drive-in movie tour ever” and also promised that the all movie showings will be “socially distanced” to ensure that the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic is not an issue.
Janey Whiteside, Chief Customer Officer of Walmart explained the idea and express her excitement for customers to experience it:
“Summer hasn’t really felt like summer yet, and I know I hear every day, ‘Mom, I’m bored!’ Through our digital means and vast footprint of stores, we’re hoping to bring some summer fun to families across the country. We know Walmart plays a role in our communities that extends far beyond getting them necessary supplies, and we see that now more than ever.”
Walmart also hyped customers up for the drive-ins on social media, tweeting “Starting in August at select Walmart stores, we’re partnering with @Tribeca and rolling out the red carpet for drive-in movie premieres, complete with car-side food and beverage service. Stay tuned for more details. See you at the movies!”
