Lauryn Hill Defends Her Concert Tardiness

According to the singer’s official website, the 25th anniversary tour for her debut album is currently underway. TMZ reports that Hill’s tour made a recent stop in Los Angeles, California, on the evening of Saturday, November 4.

Footage from the tour stop, obtained by The Shade Room, shows the 48-year-old singer speaking passionately to her fans about her tardiness from the concert stage.

“They hate that she’s late,” the singer said. “She’s late… Yo, y’all are lucky that I make it on this… stage every night!”

Hill explained that she doesn’t perform at concerts due to societal expectations but rather her own duty to God.

The Singer Speaks On Touring The Globe Off Of Her Only Album

As the singer’s impassioned speech continued, she recalled her debut album’s success. However, she explained that “no one showed up” to ask if she’d “like to make another one.”

“So I went around the world, and I played the same album over and over and over… because we’re the survivors. And we’re not just the survivors, we’re the thrivers,” Hill continued.

Social Media Reacts

Social media users entered The Shade Room’s comment section to share their reactions to Hill’s explanation for her tardiness. Many did not seem to agree.

Instagram user @indeskribeabull wrote.

“I appreciate this, but habitual lateness is a blatant lack of consideration for other people’s time. With love. ❤️”
While Instagram user @kokoskinn added.
“Girl don’t put god in this he’s an on time god”
Instagram user @magdarichxo spoke from their alleged experience attending one of Hill’s concerts.
“A lot of people in these comments have never been to one of her concerts. Imagine paying $200-400 for tickets to see your idol preform on a Sunday night for her to be two hours late – mind you, you got work in the morning. Because the venue (or city ordinances) require live music events to be done at a certain time, a set that was meant to be an hourish is now 20 minutes long because there are hard stops for concerts, they cannot go over. I love her dearly but I learned my lesson, never again.”
While Instagram user @_journeywithjas_ added.
“Babygirl, respect is just a minimum. Time is our greatest asset. Be on time. You toured around the world off the love people have for your gifts too, and the sacrifice people made to spend money to see you. Entitlement gives me the ick, don’t care who it is.”
Instagram user @jfeziaartist2 shared their brief thought.
“Love her, but the accountability is severely lacking. 🤦🏾”
