Last week, The United States Court of Appeals for the ninth circuit ruled that sharing your Netflix password is officially a federal crime.
They found that in certain instances, sharing passwords is punishable under the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act (CFAA) – which focuses on hacking.
The decision came as part of the United States v. David Nosal case in which over a decade ago, Nosal left his job and yet continued to use the password of a fellow employee who was still with the firm in order to download that employee’s personal information. He was found guilty and served a year and one day in prison.
Now, streaming accounts won’t be directly affected by the ruling, however the ruling will be able to be exercised against them. So, basically, don’t share your password with people you don’t know that well or else “clank-clank”!
