‘What You Know About That?’ Black Music Month Lets Us Look At The Art Of Sampling & Bridging The Generational Music Gap

Our parents can be annoying when we like something they like, right? The moment we sing one of their old school songs, they want to turn around with a quickness and ask, “what you know about that?” as if we didn’t grow up in their house listening to that music.

I have an old soul for music and love the artists and producers who give new life to classics so that we can continue to enjoy the sounds from previous generations. It really shows how much of an influence Black music has had in the industry.

What makes sampling even more special is that the kings and queens before us provided these songs for our newer generations of kings and queens. So next time one of your elders asks, “what you know about that?” you know you can say, “a lot, actually.” SWIPE through to see some of our favorite old school sounds and how they were sampled and let us know some of your favorite samples of all time!
