WNBA Issues Fines For Warm-Up T-Shirts In Wake Of Recent Shootings

The women of the New York Liberty, Phoenix Mercury and Indiana Fever all sported black warm-up t-shirts in the wake of the recent shootings.

According to the ESPN, the WBNA fined each team $5,000 and each player was fined $500. All of this came about because according to the rules, players are not to alter their uniforms in any kind of way.

The Liberty has worn all black t-shirts for the past four games including Wednesday morning. Both the Mercury and Fever wore their shirts on Tuesday night.

WNBA president Lisa Borders said in a statement, “We are proud of WNBA players’ engagement and passionate advocacy for non-violent solutions to difficult social issues but expect them to comply with the league’s uniform guidelines.”

The league issued a memo earlier this week reminding the players of the uniform policy after the teams wore their shirts.

The Liberty reached a compromise where instead of wearing their warm up shirts that are all black with their logo, they will wear an all black shirt with the Adidas logo showing.

If you all remember the Minnesota Lynx did the same earlier this month, and agreed to show their support in alternate ways.

Mercury forward, Mistie Bass had this to say, “Don’t say we have a voice then fine us when we use it. #notpuppets #cutthestrings”
