Despite being unable to be physically present with his fans, Young Thug still found a way to send them a message during Hot 97’s Summer Jam concert. As y’all know, Thug is currently being held at the Cobb County Jail on RICO charges.
In the form of a voice message, Thugger sent uplifting words to everyone at MetLife Stadium on Sunday. He thanked fans for their ongoing support and urged everyone to support the Protect Black Art campaign–a petition to prevent prosecutors from using rappers’ lyrics against them in criminal investigations.
I just want to say thank you to all of my friends and my family for coming out and supporting us. You know, your support during this time means a lot to us, ya know.”
You know, this isn’t about me or YSL. I always use my music as a form of artistic expression, and now I see that Black artists and rappers don’t have that, you know, freedom. Everybody please sign the ‘Protect Black Art’ petition and keep praying for us. I love you all.”
YSL Records’ Co-Founder Kevin Liles reportedly partnered with Atlantic Records COO Julie Greenwald to launch the petition following Young Thug and Gunna’s arrests. A post on YSL’s Instagram account detailed the purpose of the initiative saying:
Black artists having their lyrics used against them in court is a violation of their constitutional rights. What is happening currently to the artists of YSL is a prime example of this.
Both Thugger and Gunna have been denied bond in the case, and will remain in police custody until they stand trial in January 2023. During one of his hearings, a prosecutor presented lyrics from Young Thug’s single ‘Slatty’ to support allegations of him being the King Pin of an alleged gang.
