Roommates, once again Kim Kardashian West is using her passion for criminal justice reform to help prisoners serving unjust sentences. Alexis Martin is the latest to benefit, as she just had her sentence commuted only weeks after appearing in Kim’s documentary, which spotlighted her case.
Ohio Governor Mike DeWine officially commuted the prison sentence of 22-year-old Alexis Martin, who was convicted of murder at age 15 and serving a life sentence. She was forced into prostitution as a teenager, which led to her involvement in the fatal shooting of her pimp during a robbery.
Alexis was recently featured in Kim Kardashian West’s Oxygen network documentary, “Kim Kardashian West: The Justice Project”—which detailed the cases of select inmates serving unfair prison terms. Kim and her legal team were actively working on Alexis’s release.
In a statement to the media, Governor DeWine said this of commuting her sentence:
“Alexis Martin was 15 years old when she committed her crime and 17 when she went to prison. She is a child sex trafficking survivor. She will be sent to a group home and will be under supervision for a period of time.”
Upon hearing the news, Kim took to Twitter to express her happiness, writing “Alexis Martin is a sex traffic survivor and I was honored to be able to share her story on the Justice Project. Thank you Governor DeWine for commuting her sentence.”
While in prison, Alexis earned her GED to become a certified dog trainer and ran group for survivors of human trafficking.
