A man marched into a Manhattan office tower firing a rifle Monday (July 29), killing four people, including a New York City police officer. Officials, who identified the gunman as Shane Tamura, say he wounded a fifth person before taking his own life.

More Details About The NYC Tower Shooting

The shooting took place at 345 Park Avenue, a skyscraper that is home to the NFL’s headquarters, investment firm Blackstone, the financial firm KPMG, and other tenants. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch revealed on Monday that Shane Tamura, who is from Las Vegas, had a “documented mental health history,” per the Associated Press. However, the motive for the shooting is still being investigated.

“We are working to understand why he targeted this particular location,” Tisch said.

Surveillance video showed the man exiting a double-parked BMW just before 6:30 p.m. carrying an M4 rifle, then marching across a public plaza into the building.

Then, the gunman started firing, Tisch said. The first person Tamura shot was a police officer working a corporate security detail. A woman who tried to take cover as Tamura sprayed the lobby with gunfire was also struck. Shane then made his way to the elevator bank and shot a guard at a security desk and shot another man in the lobby. Afterward, he took the elevator to the 33rd floor offices of the company that owned the building, Rudin Management. There, he shot and killed one person on that floor. Shane Tamura then shot himself, the commissioner said.

Shane Tamura Drove Across The Country To The Shooting Site

Officers found a rifle case, a revolver, magazines, and ammunition in Shane Tamura’s car, Commissioner Tisch said. They also found medication that belonged to the gunman. The initial investigation shows Shane’s vehicle traveled across the country, passing through Colorado on July 26, then Nebraska and Iowa on July 27. The car was in Columbia, New Jersey, as recently as 4:24 p.m. Monday. He drove into New York City shortly thereafter.

Tisch said there were no indications so far that Tamura had prior connections to the real estate industry or to the city. No one answered the door at the address listed for Tamura in Las Vegas.

NYC Mayor Suggests Shane Tamura Was Targeting NFL HQ (UPDATE)

For context, Rudin is one of the largest privately owned real estate companies in New York City. The company dates back to 1925, and members of the Rudin family still manage it. But, despite ending his life at their offices, investigators say the company was not his target.

According to Mayor Eric Adams, Shane Tamura allegedly tried to target the NFL headquarters but took the wrong elevator. Investigators reportedly discovered a rambling note on his body. The note suggested he had a grievance against the NFL over an unsubstantiated claim that he suffered from chronic traumatic encephalopathy. That’s a degenerative brain disease linked to concussions and other repeated head trauma common in contact sports like football. Shane Tamura had played football in high school in California nearly two decades ago. The video below has resurfaced since the New York City shooting.

Despite the note name-dropping the NFL, investigators have not officially determined the motive. Additionally, it’s still being confirmed whether the building was targeted for the NFL’s headquarters.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said in a staff memo on Tuesday that all employees were “safe and accounted for.” Goodell praised the swift law enforcement response and honored the NYPD officer who was killed in the attack. New York employees got the green light to work remotely on Tuesday or take the day off, promising additional security for the office.

Mayor Adams said one challenge of the investigation has been that Tamura only arrived in New York shortly before the shooting, leaving few clues in the area.

“We are going to communicate with federal and state partners in Las Vegas to drill down on this as much as possible including looking at his social media pages, anything that he may have in his home, so that we can continue to piece this investigation together,” Adams said.

The mayor said it’s also a challenge for law enforcement, “dealing with those who come from areas with lax gun laws that allow individuals to have these high-powered weapons into cities like New York that have strong gun laws.”

New York City Mayor Eric Adams said investigators recovered a note in which the gunman behind a deadly shooting rampage inside an office building in Midtown Manhattan talked about CTE. He also said the shooter was a high school football player but never played in college or the… pic.twitter.com/CgveeKTuTa

NYC Shooting Happened In Same Area As UnitedHealthcare CEO’s Death

Tamura’s rampage happened at the end of the workday. It was in the same part of Manhattan where Luigi Mangione gunned down the chief executive of UnitedHealthcare, Brian Thompson, in December 2024 outside a hotel hosting a conference.

Luigi Mangione, is awaiting trial. Prosecutors accuse him of killing Thompson because he was angry at perceived corporate greed, particularly in the health insurance business. He has pleaded not guilty.
