Roommates, while testifying in her own defense in court, Kim Potter tearfully recalled the moment she realized that she shot and killed Daunte Wright. “I remember yelling ‘Taser, Taser, Taser,’ and nothing happened. And then he told me I shot him,” Kim Potter said on the witness stand.
As the murder trial of 20-year-old Daunte Wright continues to unfold, the woman who shot him, former Brooklyn police officer, Kim Potter explained her recollection of events the night she killed him:
“I remember a struggle with Officer [Anthony] Luckey and the driver at the door. The driver was trying to get back into the car … I went around Officer Luckey as they’re trying to get back in the door. They’re still struggling and I can see Officer Johnson and the drivers struggling over the gearshifts because I can see Johnson’s hand and then I can see his face.
[Sgt. Mychal Johnson] had a look of fear on his face — nothing I’d seen before. We’re trying to keep him from driving away. It just went chaotic. And then I remember yelling, ‘Taser, Taser, Taser,’ and nothing happened and then [Wright] told me I shot him.”
Meanwhile, as Potter continued to be questioned, prosecutor Erin Eldridge asked, “You knew that deadly force was unreasonable and unwarranted.” To which Potter responded, “I’m sorry. I didn’t want to hurt anybody.”
As we previously reported, Kim Potter, 49, is charged with first and second-degree manslaughter for the April 11th shooting death of Daunte Wright, to which she has pled not guilty to both charges.
If convicted, Potter faces a maximum sentence of 15 years for first-degree manslaughter and a $30,000 fine and 10 years for second-degree manslaughter along with a $20,000 fine.
