Recently Nate Parker has been making headlines after his 1999 rape case resurfaced, which has made viewers question if they wanted to support his upcoming film The Birth Of A Nation.
If you all can remember earlier thisyear the film, which is about Nat Turners slave rebellion, received raved reviews at Sundance and was sold for a record breaking $17 million. However, since Parkers rape case has been brought back to light, the film has been suffering prior to its release in October.
According to TMZ, Academy President, Cheryl Boone Isaacs is till encouraging viewers to go see the film despite Parkers past. She said, I know just by the conversation that has gone on at Sundance that its clearly a movie that filmgoers should go and see.
She continued, Thats one issue, thats his personal issue. And then theres the issue of the movie. The important thing is for people to see it and enjoy the film, be impressed by the film. And I think that is what is very important. People need to see this movie.
Although he was acquitted during the case, a screening of the film has been cancelled at the American Film Institute. And the Toronto International Film Festival announced that the film would not be a part of their press conferences.
