At Least One Person Deceased After Miami-Dade Residential Building Partially Collapses

Roommates, we are sending our prayers to those in Miami who were affected by the partial building collapse that took place early Thursday. At the moment, at least one person has been confirmed deceased, and a young boy was seen being pulled to safety after the building collapsed.

According to NBC News, records show that the 12-story building is called Champlain Towers South and is located in Surfside, and was built in 1981. The building consisted of more than 100 residential units. However, it is unclear how many people were inside at the time of the collapse, which took place just before 2 a.m.

A rescue and search effort is currently taking place, and at least 10 people were treated for injuries at the scene, and dozens of others have been displaced. Two local area hospitals confirmed that they received at least three people, two of who were reportedly in critical condition.

Surfside Mayor Charles Burkett said that there was work being done to the building’s roof, and added, “but you would never expect that to be the issue. I think that this is a catastrophic failure of that building.”

Mayor Burkett continued to say, “The Miami-Dade Fire Department has been awesome. They’ve gotten in there and they’re in there risking their lives. I mean we don’t know if the rest of that building’s gonna come down.”

Surfside Police Sgt. Marian Cruz said, “It’s a very active scene. I advise everyone to just stay out of the area so that fire rescue and officers can conduct rescues and do what we need to do.”

There are more than 50 people that have been unaccounted for.
